Kathmandu: Former Home Minister and Nepali Congress leader Ramesh Lekhak has urged the high-level inquiry commission formed to probe the violence and damage during the Gen-G movement to conduct its work within democratic norms and the legal framework.
Speaking to reporters at the Nepali Congress central office in Sanepa on Friday, Lekhak emphasized that the government, the inquiry commission, and political parties must perform their respective responsibilities within the bounds of the constitution and rule of law.
‘All Should Act Within Legal Norms’
Leader Lekhak stressed that everyone should move forward by respecting democratic values and legal principles, warning that the nation is already heading toward political complexity.
“In such a sensitive situation, restraint is essential from all sides,” he said.
Background: Gen-G Movement and Violence
The Gen-G protests, held on Bhadra 23 and 24, were initiated by youths demonstrating against corruption, nepotism, and the social media ban. However, the demonstrations turned violent, resulting in 73 deaths and hundreds of injuries across the country.
In response, the government formed a high-level inquiry commission led by former Special Court Judge Gauri Bahadur Karki to investigate the violence, repression, and looting that occurred during the movement.
